![]() GalantaGalanta is situated in the SW part of the Slovak Republic, approximately 50 kms NE from Bratislava. The city of 16,500 inhabitants serves as an important administrative and cultural hub of the district sharing the same name. Hot water indicated by the vast number of thermal springs in the vicinity of Galanta have been used for district heating since the 1980s, by doing so being pioneers of RES applications in the former Eastern-Block countries. Presently the city has two active geothermal wells used for district heating. FGG-2 was drilled in 1983 as part of a research project and FGG-3 was realized in 1984 as a constructional experiment. Geothermal hot water produced by the two wells is used for heating and also to generate domestic hot water in concerned areas. Several residential buildings (6-8 floor block of flats), a hospital, an elderly home, a nursery, a primary school and two groceries are heated by geothermal energy (the rest of the city is on natural gas supply). The Concerto activities will focus on the further utilization of geothermal energy, (a unique treasure of the city) and on the integration of other renewable energy sources. The municipality's main objective is to use this green energy widespread in the city and assure its conservation for the next generations. The Concerto activities include:
Retrofitting of the selected dwellings will include:
Retrofitting of the residential buildings had been carried out way ahead of schedule resulting in a total saving larger than the annual heating energy consumption of a single multi-storey block of flats prior its refurbishment. Also, formal legal steps (public procurement, distributor's permits) were performed aiming the implementation of the PV system in these buildings.
